The South African Handmade Collection trade show, organized by the Department of Trade and Industry South Africa, is a government initiative targeted at accelerating the economy, creating much-needed jobs and alleviating poverty via a foreign buyers' incentives program. The foreign buyers incentives scheme enables the creation of a bridge between South African artisans and US wholesalers, importers and retailers of arts and crafts by bringing them together over 3 days of an intense program of activities.  The South exhibitors are selected after an intense nationwide viewing and assessment process and each province of South Africa is represented by a pavilion at the show. This year the SAHC trade show offered more than 200 booths with anything from the well-known colorful South African wire baskets, to ceramics, beaded jewelry, glass statues, paper products, mohair and wooden art pieces.
