Screening of the South African film “Themba” as part of Cinema Chicago’s International
Summer Screenings, 15 June 2011
The South African Consulate General in Chicago co-hosted the screening of the South
African film, Themba, A Boy Called Hope, at the Chicago Cultural Centre on 15 June
2011. “Themba” was one of 21 international films screened during Cinema Chicago’s
International Summer Screenings programmes on Wednesday’s and Saturday’s from May
to September 2011.
The audience, which filled the Claudia Cassidy theatre at the Cultural Centre to
its capacity of 285, included many South Africans. After the screening, a panel consisting
of Dr Nomonde Xundu, Health Attache at the South African Embassy in Washington, Ms
Magugu Davis, principal partner of Thanda International and Judge George Maluleke,
South Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg, led the audience in a lively discussion about
the film and life in South Africa in general.
“Themba” tells the story of a young boy who lives in a village in the Eastern Cape
with his mother and sister. He dreams of becoming a famous soccer player but his
life is fraught with hardship and the pain of an absent father. When his mother leaves
to work in Cape Town, Themba and his sister’s lives take a turn for the worse. They
eventually set out to search for their mother whom they find infected with HIV and
abandoned in Khayalitsha. The children start caring for their mother, but have their
own challenges with life in the city. Despite his worries about HIV, Themba participates
in the local soccer scene and attracts the attention of the selectors of the national
soccer team.
